Chancellor’s Message

Mavericks,

As a metropolitan university, the University of Nebraska at Omaha is deeply connected to the people, challenges, and opportunities that shape our community. That connection requires imagination.

Imagination is often associated with creativity, but it is also a powerful force for progress. It is what allows us to see possibilities where others see obstacles, to ask new questions, and to envision solutions that have not yet been discovered. At UNO, imagination drives innovation, learning, and impact.

Every day, our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners demonstrate the power of imagination in action. Researchers pursue ideas before outcomes are certain, driven by curiosity and a desire to improve lives. Educators create learning experiences that help students see new opportunities for themselves and the world around them. Community partnerships emerge from a shared vision of what our city and region can become when we work together.

Imagination also plays a critical role in student success. The ability to envision a future for oneself – to see new possibilities, careers, and pathways – is often the first step toward achieving them. At UNO, we strive to create an environment where students are encouraged to think boldly, explore widely, and develop the confidence to turn ideas into action.

By embracing imagination, we expand what is possible for our university. Together, we are creating new opportunities, solving real-world challenges, and shaping a future that is brighter and full of possibilities.

Thank you for being part of the UNO community and for helping us imagine what comes next.

Sincerely,

Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA

At the University of Nebraska at Omaha, progress starts with processing what matters most, and preservation is about carrying forward what allows for adaptation and growth.

Traditionally, preservation calls to mind historic buildings, archival records, or traditions. At UNO, the concept is broader and more urgent. Preservation goes beyond saving the past. It is about safeguarding people, ideas and systems so communities can thrive now and in the future. From strengthening civic well-being to advancing cybersecurity and digital integrity, UNO is focused on sustaining the foundations that allow innovation to move forward.

Chancellor’s Message

At the University of Nebraska at Omaha, we often highlight the degrees earned, research conducted, partnerships made and the lives we have transformed. These are the metrics of a thriving urban public research university.

But, behind every achievement is something deeper that doesn’t always make the headlines, yet shapes everything we do: joy.

At UNO we find joy in community, possibility and in knowing that every Maverick – past, present, and future – plays a part in shaping a better tomorrow.
