Dawn marked her 19th year of teaching for UNO this fall. “ It’s been quite a journey from Saturday morning classes competing with the football team band outside the window to the pandemic ending my on-campus classes,” Cripe said. Her classes included Women’s Studies (The Humanities), Speech, Journalism, Gender & Communication; Gender and Leadership; and Women’s and Gender Studies (The Humanities). Earning the MAL Award in 2020 for teaching was the highlight of her career. “As I enter my 20th year teaching, I’m thankful for my professors who taught me; and later as colleagues supported my career along the way,” Cripe said.
Kristen has received the Alexa Rose Fellow, a $25,000 artistic merit award. Chosen from hundreds of applicants, Furlong was chosen for her sophisticated and multi-layered work that educates and invites the audience to engage more deeply. Known for her more two-dimensional pieces, Furlong also has sculpture and fiber-based pieces that audiences connect deeply to. Sun Valley Museum of Art Curator Courtney Gilbert feels there is no limit to what Furlong can explore through the Alexa Rose Fellowship. “I have worked with artists from across the country and around the world, and the quality of Kirsten’s work equals that of many nationally known artists.” More information can be found at 2025 Alexa Rose Fellow: KIRSTEN FURLONG
Trudy has published two books available on Amazon. “Radishes and Red Badanas – A novel of the 1960s” was published in 2022. It is a work of historical fiction that tells that story of Becky Jamison’s journey through the turbulent times of the late 1960s. As she leaves her small town in Kentucky to attend college near Chicago, Becky confronts the political and cultural turmoil of the times: protests, demonstrations, occupations, riots, assassinations, drugs and free-love. As a woman, Becky will never have to fight in a war she doesn’t believe in, but the draft comes to her in its hunger for her brothers, friends and lovers. In this coming-of-age novel, Becky Jamison realizes the importance of speaking out no matter the cost and discovers the redemptive power of love to heal in times of tragedy.” “Me, My Guitar, and Elvis” was published in 2024. It is a work of mainstream women’s fiction that weaves together the stories of Wendy, her stolen guitar and the life of Elvis Presley. It is a story of survival, resilience and one woman’s ability to persevere in the face of abuse and loss. Ultimately it is a story about how love can heal our brokenness.
